- Served as a battery clerk
- Participated in several landings, including Oran and Sicily
- Fought at Kasserine Pass
- Narrowly escaped being captured by Germans in an ambush; felt “nothing could hurt” him after that day
- Retired from the National Guard in 1969 as a brigadier general
